Cardiff Castle
Tunnels were used as an air-raid shelter

This simple solid state media player doesn't look very exciting. The black box hides a lot of possibilities. We have used this player in two completely different situations -
With the 70th anniversary of the Cardiff Blitz in mind, Cardiff Castle will be marking this important date with the opening of the Wartime Shelters. Few people realise that within the walls of the Castle are tunnels – tunnels which came into their own as air-raid shelters during the Second World War.
It was estimated that more than 1800 people could take shelter within the walls and when the sirens sounded, people who lived and worked in the city would rush to the shelters. Special ramps were built so that people could gain access into the walls quickly. Recent research has revealed there were dormitories with bunks, kitchens, toilets and first aid posts concealed within the walls.
Now, you will be able to see what the air-raid shelters looked like, hear the sounds from a bygone age or join a guided tour by an Air-Raid Warden in full costume for a vivid recounting of this turbulent time.
The audio system was designed and installed by Drake AV using a solid state media player.
The same solid state unit that plays the air-raid siren in the Castle runs a series of images and videos for a network of twenty postgraduate units around Wales.
These units are easily updated by plugging in a USB memory stick so there is no need for any network installation. The software allows comprehensive control over the play list. Sequence, timing and scheduling are all controllable and you can even preset the playback volume item by item.
